School Curriculum & Subjects

What students study in KISAKATA J.H. is prescribed in the Courses of Study, which are
established by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The
curriculum consists of various academic subjects, moral education, special activities and
integrated studies, etc., based on Courses of Study.

In KISAKATA J.H., students study Japanese (kokugo), social studies (shakai), mathematics
(suugaku), science (rika), music(ongaku), art (bijutsu), physical education (taiiku), technical arts
and homeeconomics (gijutsu katei) and foreign languages (gaikokugo)–usually English, etc.
Students also study moral education, special activities, and integrated studies. The language
used in classes – including special classes and schools is Japanese.

Textbooks used in classes are free of charge. But our school also uses reference
materials in addition to textbooks. These reference books are not provided free of charge.
As for grade level promotion and moving from one school level to another, there is no
system for skipping grades during the compulsory education period in Japan. A student
advances from one grade to the next. After completing their compulsory education, in order
to get into a senior high school, students are usually required to pass an entrance examination.

encompass positive and negative numbers. To enable them to understand the meaning of using
letters and equations and express and apply quantitative relationships and rules briefly and
general terms.

figures (particularly plane and solid geometrical figures) through observation, manipulation, and
experimentation: furthermore, to cultivate their basis of logical thinking.

students to learn observational and experimental skills , to develop the ability to give
consideration to the results of observations and experiments, and develop and express their
own ideas, and at the same time, to enable students to understand familiar substances, chemical
change and atoms/molecules, the use of substances and chemical reactions, and so on, and
to develop scientific views and thinking about these phenomena.
(4) Through investigative activities into phenomena concerned with matter and energy, to develop
an attitude of thinking scientifically in relation to everyday life, and to enable students to see
nature from a comprehensive perspective.

Special Support Education

In KISAKATA J.H. this year, there are two special support classes for the students who can't attend
the class because of their mental illness .In these classes, education is individualized in order to meet the
special needs of the students. Therefore they are able to develop their capabilities to the fullest extent
and cultivate their ability to participate in the activities of senior high schools and society by themselves.

Lunch and Cleaning Time
In KISAKATA J.H. as in most junior high schools in Japan, school lunch is provided as a part of the
school's educational activities. School lunches are planned so that students will learn the proper way of
eating and learn suitable or good human relationships. This is done through students setting the table,
clearing the table and eating a well-balanced diet while having fun together. In this way, students can learn
to live healthily.
Parents/guardians pay for the cost of the ingredients of lunch, and the amount is about 5,000 yen
to 6,000 yen a month, depending on the grade.

As for cleaning time, students share responsibilities for cleaning the classrooms, school grounds, etc.
Usually they do this after the 6th period, but sometimes before 1st period .

Club Activities

Those who wish to do so can join athletic or cultural activities after school. Club activities are
extremely important in teaching students how to interact with others, teaching
"Senpai-kouhai"(senior-junior) relations, teaching students how to work in groups, etc. Therefore, most
students participate in a club. But this is not mandatory in Kisakata J.H.
On average, each student will spend about 2 hours doing club activities each day at school. Teachers supervise club activities.

The Significance of Club Activities

2.      Students should be self-conscious of the viewpoints of others, while at the same time participate in the spirit
   of cooperation.

3.      Activities will foster mental as well as physical ability, and teach students about enduring hardships.
4.      Students will learn to improve their manners and attitudes toward others.
Rules of Joining and Quitting Clubs
1.   The period for which a club must be joined is one year.
2.     If you want to join a club, you can. No one is refused.
3.     A student may not be a member of both an athletic club and a cultural club.
4.     As a general rule, students are not allowed to quit a club; however, under special circumstances it will be
considered. This will be done in conjunction with the club’s coach/advisor, head teacher of the grade,
parent or guardian, and 4 members of the upper advisory committee.

aid is given in the health center. If necessary, the family or a hospital will be contacted. Also, as determined by law, students are checked yearly by school doctors.

   Guidance and Counseling

At KISAKATA J.H. there are opportunities for educational counseling in which parents/guardians and
teachers exchange information about children's issues. Topics such as bullying, refusal to go to school,
career guidance, etc., can be discussed.
The following are such opportunities for educational counseling in school.
1. Home Visitation
 (Katei houmon)
The class teacher visits the children’s home and discusses
the student's life at school and at home. This is not done at all
schools.
2. Parent/Teacher Meeting
 (Hogosha kai)

Parents/guardians go to school to listen and talk to the principal
and classteachers.
Topics often relate to issues common to all the children as a
group rather than those of individual children.
3. Individual Interview
 (Kojin mendan)

This meeting normally takes place between the class teacher and
either the child or the parent/guardian. (It can take also place as a
three way discussion including the child, parent and teacher.)
This is a good opportunity to talk about personal problems and
concerns. The date is arranged in advance and advised by the class
teacher.
4. About Educational Counseling

There are other opportunities for educational counseling.
Prefectural and municipal boards of education provide opportunities
to consult about children’s education on topics such as special
support education for children with disabilities, bullying, refusal to
go to school, etc.

Financial Assistance

Financial assistance can be received from NIKAHO board of education for
school supplies and school lunches, if it is determined that there is a need for this.
Please contact our school for details.
